Efficient Topology Design Algorithms for Power Grid Stability

The dynamic response of power grids to small disturbances influences their overall stability. This letter examines the effect network topology on linearized time-invariant dynamics electric systems. proposed framework utilizes H 2 -norm based stability metrics study optimal placement lines existing networks as well design new networks. task is first posed an NP-hard mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) that exactly reformulated a linear (MILP) using McCormick linearization. To improve computation time, graph-theoretic properties are exploited derive valid inequalities (cuts) and tighten bounds continuous optimization variables. Moreover, cutting plane generation procedure put forth able interject MILP solver augment additional constraints problem on-the-fly. efficacy our approach in designing grid topologies demonstrated through numerical tests IEEE 39-bus network.
